Do you know what you’d like to be doing in one year’s time? Do you want to move forward in your career or personal life?
If so, you should set goals. Goals provide us with direction and focus, and they allow us to define how we want to succeed. But setting goals isn’t as simple as saying “I want to do this”; you also have to set targets and milestones to ensure you actually achieve them in a reasonable length of time.
Here are six tips to help you achieve your goals this year.
1. Evaluate The Previous Six Months
The first thing you should do is revisit the goals you had six months ago. Cross off any goals that you did achieve, and think about the remaining goals; do you still want to achieve them, or do you have new goals now? If you have the same goals but they still seem far away, you may want to reassess your efforts to achieve them. It is also important to write down your current goals; after all, recent research found that you are nearly 50% more likely to achieve your professional goals if you put them on paper!
2. Use The GROW Model
The GROW model is a useful structure that you can use to achieve your goals. The acronym stands for Goal, Reality, Options, and What next? So start by setting a goal, and then focus on the reality of the goal; how long will it realistically take to achieve? Do you need to work on the goal every single day? Have you made any progress towards this goal already?
Once you have considered the reality you can focus on your options. What are your options to achieve the goal; for instance, if you want a better paid job, is it easier to work in the field or get a qualification? Everyone has different options and possibilities, so this step will make it easier for you to figure out which option will help you to reach your goal.
Finally you must ask yourself “What next?”. Once you have achieved your goals, do you want to set more goals? Or will it take you years or even decades to achieve your goals? Consider what you want in a long-term sense, and keep it in the back of your mind as you work on your current goals. This will help you to continue moving forward through life, so you are more likely to have a long-term, successful career.
3. Don’t Forget About Personal Goals
When it comes to setting goals, many people only focus on professional goals, but it is important to set personal goals too. After all, personal goals will also better your life, and they may even help with your professional goals; for instance, improving your self-confidence will benefit your career in many ways.
4. Set Little Milestones
Once you have set your goals, you can set little milestones to help you achieve them. For instance, if you want to own your own jewelry business, you could set a small milestone of joining Etsy, or creating a professional home office. These accomplishments will motivate you to get started as they are fairly achievable, and they will also show you how far you have come.
